An alternative to a day out at the beach in Corsica
Blog > An alternative to a day out at the beach in Corsica
Our experts have some great tips on a few alternative natural spots to relax and enjoy the Corsican sun.
Corsica has many hidden gems across the island that provide a perfect day out for couples, families and groups alike! The gorges in the mountainous areas of the island provide a magnificent backdrop to your day out and allow you to explore the island further than the coastline. These gorges are unique rocky valleys, with crystal-clear waters to greet you at the bottom.
Recently members of our sales and commercial teams visited a few of the hotels that are located right next to the gorges themselves, and they’ve brought back some great tips to make the most of your day out.
The Restonica area of the island near to the town of Corte contains some wonderful gorges. Drive south out of the town of Corte and follow the road out further into the forests and maquis. There is no spot or car park to look out for, simply find a place that is safe to leave your car on the side of the road and scramble down to the gorge! You will notice that there will be areas where lots of cars are parked, and this will mean that there is a nice and easy route down into to the gorge and the river below. If you would like to find a tranquil spot to yourself, keep searching as you drive along and you are sure to find one. Once you have chosen your route down you will be stunned by the glorious scenery you are now in. With a rocky bed and glorious, clear waters these gorges provide the perfect hideaway escape. Listen to the sounds of the birds, the river trickling over rocks and the breeze gently rustling the leaves of the trees around you.
Set your day bag aside and head on into the water, be warned, it may be cold! However, in the height of the summer this is a superb way to cool off (don’t forget your sea shoes). Many people bring a picnic with them and find little spots on the rocks to spread out their towels and enjoy an al fresco lunch.
There are two hotels in this area that boast amazing locations right next to the gorges: Hotel Dominique Colonna and Hôtel les Jardins la Glacière, both just outside of the town of Corte (2km), where you will find havens in the countryside.
Les Jardins de Glacière is the perfect hotel for walkers, after a long day walking in the stunning countryside, soak your weary feet in one of the two hot tubs at the hotel, or take a refreshing dip in the pool. The hotel blends in effortlessly with its surroundings within the rugged mountains and offers spacious rooms for its guests to get a restful night’s sleep after a long walk.
Just along the road is Hotel Dominique Colonna, a 4-star hotel that boasts romantic charm and stylish interiors. This hotel is perfect for a stay if you want to explore the surrounding mountains but caters well to those who want to switch off and read a good book by the pool. There is a spa cabin available to have massages if you wish, perfect for achy legs! Both hotels will provide you with a packed lunch to pick up in the morning on request, ideal if you are heading out on a walk, or spending an afternoon down by the river!
If you aren’t staying near central Corsica, don’t worry, there are other regions to explore the various gorges from. If you are staying in La Balagne region, then L’Asco gorge is perfect for a day trip and easily driveable. So, if you are staying in Calvi you will still be able to visit these beautiful natural playgrounds!
To find your perfect Corsican holiday and explore the gorges yourself – stay at one of our hotels in La Balagne region, Corte or even St Florent!
