A day trip to Bonifato Forest

This magnificent spot in northern Corsica is a must-visit on your next holiday. A 30-minute drive from Calvi makes for the perfect day trip.

Bonifato Forest is a tranquil gem near Calvi town, with forests surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and abundant walking trails. When you arrive, you will be directed to the car park and provided with a handy map, showcasing the different routes and trails, including access to the infamous GR20. There is something for everyone here, with trails varying from 2-hour loops to full-day hikes that will require some great stamina! 

Ella, from the marketing team recently holidayed in Calvi and headed to the forest for a day out in the fresh mountain air, opting for the 2-hour loop that crosses the Figarella River twice, taking you up into the hills on a fun and beautiful walk. It is worth noting that it gets very hot in the height of summer, and it is best to take plenty of water and some food with you, however, there is a restaurant opposite the car park for those who wish to grab a bite to eat from there. This loop is marked on the map with a blue line, named 'Boucle de Ficaghjola'. It is a stunning route with parts of the walk meandering through forest tracks, mountain passes and a quaint bridge over the river, and, if you are lucky enough, you will spot some beautiful birds along the way too.

This area of the Bonifato Forest is the access route for two stages of the GR20 – Carozzu Refuge and Piobbu Refuge – making it a popular place for people of all ages looking to take on one challenge or another. The perfect day out here isn’t complete without a dip in the refreshing Figarella River. As you make your way along the various trails, you will find plenty of spots to settle yourself for a few hours of sunbathing and swimming. Don’t forget to bring some shoes you can wear in the water so you can make your way across the rocks to find the ideal spot to sit back, relax and enjoy a picnic. Take a dip in the natural swimming pools and feel the refreshing flow of fresh water over you after a morning hiking the trails. Families and couples alike can be seen enjoying everything that this area has to offer, which includes rock climbing and cycling, making it the perfect destination for adventure lovers!
