Some coastal and mountain roads are narrow and winding, with very little room for manoeuvre; it can be a more than a little unnerving when you come face-to-face with a coach coming down a steep single lane mountain road. The roads are generally fairly slow with fifty kilometres taking at least an hour. Anyone who has seen the Rallye de Corse (the French stages of the WRC) will know the terrain already.
During July and August the roads can be busy but at other times you won't see as much traffic as you do in the UK. In common with other parts of the Mediterranean, you may find the driving of other road users a little unpredictable.
Taxis
Taxis operate in most towns and are identified by a sign on the roof of the car. Fares can be expensive. Our representatives will be able to provide details of local taxi companies.
Public Transport
Public transport is limited on the island with the exception of the train that runs from Bastia via Corté to Ajaccio, with a branch line from Ponte Leccia to the seaside resorts of L'Ile Rouse and Calvi. Traditionally it has been a 'boneshaker' of a ride, the reason why the locals call it "U Trinighellu" or the trembler. It is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the island with stunning panoramas that you won't see from the car as well as a useful means of getting about, especially on the seaside line along the Balagne coast. The mainline train from Bastia to Ajaccio cuts through the heart of the mountains over viaducts and bridges and through no less than 38 tunnels, placing it among the world's top scenic railways. Ajaccio and Bastia also have bus services.
