Destination Guide

Corsica is situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, 170km off the French coast and 80 kms from Italy.

Corsica has both French and Italian flavours but retains a distinct personality.

Lumio and Calenzana

Villages for those "in the know"

Lumio is a village full of character with nearby beaches of fabulous silver sand with views out over Calvi bay. Calenzana, the start of the famous GR20, is set between mountains and sea. They are both real working villages, complete with an impressive church or two, an atmospheric square, and more than their fair share of restaurants.

Lumio and Calenzana are popular with those 'in the know'. Lumio is often the holiday destination for French footballers, supermodels, journalists and artists, whereas Calenzana, time and again, attracts those who are looking for a quieter way of life, whilst making Corsica their home. Their charm lies with their unspoilt and typically Corsican atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of the larger resort towns. Lumio and Calenzana have a quieter, more relaxed pace of life that suits holiday living and are famous for their handicrafts as well as their fine award winning wines.

Lumio village is set in a privileged, perched position on the hillside with truly outstanding views out over the bay, towards Calvi Citadel. Below the village, just a short drive away, are a number of delightful unspoilt beaches of silver sand, a number of these with great beachside restaurants that serve fine food for discerning diners.

Calenzana is the start of Corsica's two most famous footpaths, the GR20 and the Mare e Monti and therefore has a number of facilities that you would only expect to find in a larger community. With a number of restaurants that suit all budgets and the beach just a 15 minute drive away even in the height of summer, the village and its surrounding area have always proved popular with our guests.

Things to see and do

  • From the centre of Lumio, an easy walk leads in 45 minutes to the deserted village of Occi above the village. When the wells dried up the villagers just left, and the houses and church stand abandoned.
  • Spend a day just along the coast at Aregno-plage, a mile long crescent of golden sand where there are various watersports available, including windsurfing.
  • For walkers, travel to the Forest of Bonifatu, below the towering peak of Monte Cintu. Here you will find a number of walks as well as refreshing rock pools to dip your feet in.
  • Quad bike on a tour through the Maquis, available from a number of locations in the Balagne, ask our representatives for details.
  • Hop on the train from one of the stops along the coast and travel to the towns of L'lle Rousse and Calvi without the stress of finding a parking space.
  • Have dinner in one of the beachside restaurants serving superb local seafood. The atmosphere is delightful with the sea lapping the beach as you sit savouring the fine local produce.
