Is religion important in Corsica?
Corsica is predominantly Roman Catholic, and some houses may have religious symbols on walls. Many establishments close on Sundays and communities celebrate their saints days.
What is 'The Moor's Head'?
It is the symbol of Corsica, representing the liberation of Corsica.
The Moors head, dating back to the 13th. century, can be seen on locally produced goods, official buildings, Corsican owned properties and vehicles and is a simple statement of pride in their country. It was forgotten for centuries and established as the traditional Corsican flag by Pasquale Paoli who moved the bandana from its original position covering the eyes symbolising the liberation of Corsica.
Do Corsicans speak English?
In general the younger generation do speak English, but Corsican menus and signs will not necessarily be in English and French, especially in smaller towns. All Corsican's appreciate when visitors attempt the odd word in French, e.g. Bonjour - Hello, Merci - Thank you & s'il vous plait - please.
