Corsica to prevent water shortages

22 May 2008

To prevent the occasional drought on the island to become a problem, Corsica is currently discussing over various projects which will ensure that the whole island can have access to water at any time.

As reported by Corse Matin, a new project at Cargese, near Ajaccio, where two reservoirs of 40,000 m3 each are to be constructed before mid 2009, is currently in progress.

The project is overlooked by the Corsican hydraulic office, which also plans to build a new water main of 12 km to transport water from Figarella to the Codole dam in the Balagne area. The €6.5 million project is expected to start next year.

Finally, the office is also looking into the construction of a third dam in southern Corsica at a cost of around €45 million.

The Cavu dam would be the third in the region, after the Figari and the Ospedale dams, and would contain up to 5.5 million m3 of water, a similar figure to the one in Figari.

Stephanie Grimaldi, president of the hydraulic office, told Corse Matin: "I would like the first stone of the Cavu dam to be laid by the start of 2010."
