British cyclists performed well in this year’s Criterium International, a two-day cycling event held in Corsica. Pierrick Fedringo of France won the overall event but Britons David Millar and Russell Downing both won stages; David Millar won the third and final leg of the weekend and Russell Downing won the second leg.
The race was held in Corsica this year for the first time since 1982 and is a warm up for the Tour de France; winner Fedringo says: "It's not like winning the Tour – the Tour is another dimension – but the Criterium International was the biggest race this year so far in terms of the participants, and I'm proud to have won it." Officials in Corsica are hoping to host a stage of the Tour de France in the near future.
