Holidaymakers are not fully aware of the protection available for cancelled flights.
A survey from TUI has revealed that 50 per cent of air passengers mistakenly believe that they are covered if an airline files for bankruptcy.
According to TravelMole, 90 per cent of those polled considered financial protection for their holiday an important factor.
The figures were released in light of the recent collapse of low-cost international airline Zoom this week. Over 60,000 passengers had made forward bookings with the airline.
