While some people were looking for gold, Corsicans were looking for coral.
Those red-coloured marine species formed an important part of the island's history around the 17th century and soon became known in the Mediterranean as the "red gold", a main source of income for numerous Corsican families.
Ajaccio's tourist office organises guided tours on the subject throughout the summer on Thursdays.
At the end of each tour, visitors will have the opportunity to watch a demonstration on how to cut coral.
Tours depart from the tourist office at 10am. Adult tickets cost 8 and discounted tickets 6.
