Aleria: Roman city

31 July 2008

Relics dating back from the Roman period are currently presented at the Jerome Carcopino Museum, inside French heritage monument Matra fort.

The on-site museum extends over 11 rooms, showing objects found in the region of Aleria and in the pre-Roman necropolis of Casabianda.

Some objects even date back from the 5th century B.C.

The 16th century fort itself was a major site in Corsica's past, especially during Corsica's independence wars.

Aleria is located on the eastern coast, an hour and a quarter south of Bastia and about 45 minutes away from Corte in central Corsica.
