Almost fifty per cent of Brits have declared they would rather emigrate upon retirement than stay in the UK, a recent poll by Hotproperty.co.uk has revealed.
In 2006, one in twelve British pensioners had chosen to live abroad according to the Institute for Public Policy Research, but the figures are likely to rise with the constant increase in the cost of living back in Britain.
The research also showed that no less than 33,854 pensioners had chosen France as their main retirement destination, representing 3.3 per cent of the total number of UK pensioners abroad.
France is indeed the ninth most popular place among retirees after South Africa and Italy, as it offers cheaper cost of living than the UK in popular and sunny areas like Brittany, the Provence and Corsica.
Lisa Harris, spokesperson for Saga Travel Money, said: "with the current expectation of further increasing living costs it is likely that moving abroad to enjoy retirement will become a more serious consideration for people."
