Corsica: train and trek

22 May 2008

The CTC (Collectivite Territoriale de Corse) is organising two-day treks into Corsican mountains every Wednesday during the summer.

Transport to and from Bastia, Ajaccio or Calvi and the Tavignanu valley, where the trek starts, is included in the price and is already part of the adventure as trekkers will make their way through Corsica's vegetation on the island's historical train.

Then, the nine-hour walk goes through some of the island of beauty's most unforgettable landscapes, crossing the Alzu plateau and Corte belvedere.

Trips to the Restonica valley or the Vizzavona forest are also organised through the CTC which is the main body in charge of the Corsican rail network and its refurbishment for the next few years.

The island's 230 km current network include a main line which runs from Bastia in the north to Ponte Leccia and Ajaccio in the south, via Corte, and the Balagne line which goes between Ponte Leccia and Calvi.

Since 2002, the islander rail network has become the CTC's entire responsibility, Corsica thus becoming the first French region to own its rail heritage.
