Twenty-seven years ago, a Yugoslav plane, DC-9, crashed onto Mount San-Pietro in southern Corsica, and this month's mission for ex-Yugoslav country Slovenia and Corsica is to evacuate the remaining debris, reported Corse Matin.
More than 170 people died on the crash on December, 1st, 1981, and a memorial can be found near Bicchisano Church in the nearby village Petreto-Bicchisano.
A team of 60 Slovenian firemen, nurses, rescue mountaineers and soldiers are working together to move the metal debris believed to weigh some 400 to 800 kg in total. The first operations have started last Sunday in the same fog which may have made the plane crash 27 years ago.
The site is situated at some 1,300 metres, not far from the famous GR 20 trek which covers the whole island from North to South.
The village of Petreto-Bicchisano, which is situated less than one hour away from capital Ajaccio, was also home to French politician Rene Tomasini, who was part of the Resistance during the Second World War.
