Ajaccio, capital of Corsica, is located on the west coast of the island. It lies in a sheltered position on the northern shore of the beautiful gulf of Ajaccio. The city is a must-see for anyone visiting Corsica.
Bright colors, mild climate, smiling people, Ajaccio is well known for its art de vivre and charms visitors with its little markets and narrow, winding streets.
The city is also surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches in Corsica with white sand and clear-blue water. It's a really pleasant destination, mixing relaxation and leisure with culture, simplicity and authenticity.
One of the main sights is the citadel and further down the Place Bonaparte, which includes the house where Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769. The Fesch museum is also an interesting place to visit with its magnificent collections of art work from the 14th to the 19th centuries, with Italian painters such as Botticelli or Ticien featured there.
Other attractions include the Bandera museum, the salon Napoleonien and the imperial chapel, where the imperial family is buried.
Visitors must also explore the shores of the gulf of Ajaccio. It is said to be one the most beautiful gulf in the world, surrounded by an admirable cirque of mountains with enticing beaches, charming ports, untouched creeks and also the mysterious iles Sanguinaires.
