What We Think
The most individual property in our collection, la Tour de Calanca was built in the 15th century as a watchtower. It was part of a chain of “tours génoises” which were built to protect the Corsican coast against pirate invasions. Since then, the tower has seen much quieter times and is now beautifully converted into a romantic, quirky retreat. Simply furnished in a rustic style, the décor skillfully highlights its historic past and a few medieval features such as crenellations remain intact. The property is set on 4 levels: on the ground floor, you will find the kitchen and the shower room. From here, an external staircase leads to the living room on the first floor, and a further steep flight of internal steps with narrow treads will take you to the bedroom. You will finally reach the terrace on the rooftop with fabulous panoramic views over the rocky headlands and glistening waters of the Valinco bay – once a strategic watch point it is now a truly romantic spot. And as for the grounds in which the tower hides away, they are simply sublime. You will find yourself surrounded by extensive gardens filled with an abundance of flowering plants and Mediterranean trees, and with a lovely outdoor dining area, you will soon become accustomed to the Corsican al fresco way of life. A steep path through the maquis will bring you to a gorgeous secluded cove of golden sand filled with crystal clear waters - what a privileged setting for such a charming property.
