Gulf of Porto
The coast of the Gulf of Porto is one of Corsica’s most famous landscapes. The pinnacles and ravines of the red granite Calanches soaring out of beautiful blue seas are framed behind by the jagged peaks of Paglia Orba - the island’s second highest peak. This stunning array of beautiful sights are best explored by foot or by sea and, in addition, there are daily boat trips from Porto, which visits the breathtaking UNESCO world heritage site of Scandola, with its towering, rugged red granite cliffs that plunge into the azure blue sea.
Greek Cargese
Visit the lovely cliff top village of Cargese at the northern tip of the Golfe de Sagone with an unusual history and ancestry linked to the Greek Peloponnese. Even today there are both Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches although both are presided over by the same minister. Its Greek history has left it with a unique atmosphere today and there is a certain charm to the quiet streets and whitewashed houses which are great for exploring.
Musee Fesch
Visit the Musée Fesch, housed in a palace built by Napoleon’s uncle Cardinal Fesch, to see the largest collection, with the exception of the Louvre in Paris, of Italian art in France, alongside paintings by Dutch, Spanish and Flemish masters.
Napoleon
Napoleon Bonaparte gave the town of Ajaccio international fame and visitors cannot escape his commemorative presence throughout the town including a museum of his family home ‘Maison Bonaparte’. Wander around the old town with its cluster of ancient streets spreading north and south of the Place Foch, which opens out onto the seafront by the old port. There are plenty of cafés to relax in and watch the world go by.
