Villa Tips
Strada di l'Artigiani - Handmade Trail - Discerning Souvenirs
For an interesting day out and some great gifts to take home follow the "Artisan Trail" up through the hilltop villages of the Balagne. In Calenzana you will find delicious homemade biscuits "E Fritelle" and Raku ceramics, there is honey in Moncale, glass blowing and wine in Feliceto, olive oil in Avapessa, jewelery and pottery in Corbara and a number of different crafts - everything from music boxes to printmaking - in Pigna.
Domaine d'Alzipratu - rte de Zilia
Visit the Domaine d'Alzipratu for a few bottles of the local wine. Produced on the site for the last few of decades, first by father and now son, the wines are made in the pure Corsican tradition benefitting from both the Mediterranean and mountain climate and with no need for pesticides or insecticides. Try their Fiume Seccu red wine with flavours of the maquis.
Calenzana Treasures
The church of Ste Restitude is on the road towards Calenzana and has many religious and artistic treasures (the key is available from the Tabac in Calenzana).
Tucked away in a beautiful spot of countryside outside Calvi, it’s the rural location of this high standard property that makes it so special. Secluded and peaceful, here you can really understand the meaning of ‘getting away from it all’. Plein Soleil translates as ‘sun-drenched’, and the pool and terrace area certainly live up to its name, being an all day suntrap set against the mesmerising mountain backdrop.
That’s not to say this villa is isolated; the pretty village of Zilia is nearby, wrapped in olive and almond groves, and bustling Calvi, with its Citadel, beaches and Mediterranean atmosphere is just a 20 minute drive away, so there’s plenty in the way of restaurants and bars, not forgetting the sandy beach at Calvi when you want to step back into civilisation.
The villa itself is just a few years old but has been beautifully built in a traditional Corsican style with a stone exterior and a great use of wood inside, giving it an almost farmhouse-like feel. The interior is also uniquely decorated, with an abundance of interesting artefacts, picked up on the owners’ travels, displayed on the walls adding to the homely ambiance. The main living/dining area is well equipped, and there is even an electric barbecue in the kitchen, ensuring that there is everything you need for a hassle-free break.
However, most would undoubtedly agree that the pool terrace is the feature point of the property - wood decking and cushioned sun loungers frame the infinity pool, making it the perfect place to chill out and unwind in the sunshine with a cool drink.
There are four double bedrooms sleeping up to eight people; two bedrooms in a separate outhouse, which share a bathroom, one downstairs in the main house with a private shower and bath, and finally, upstairs is the master bedroom with its own bathroom and terrace.
With plenty of space for everyone to relax in comfort, Villa Soleil is most certainly a great choice for a larger family or group of friends.
