I wanted to introduce my partner to Corsica, and for me, if we were going to stay in Calvi, then it had to be in the Citadel, just because it is so atmospheric and romantic.
It's a bit of a hike up the many stairs to reach Apartment Carla, but it's worth it, as the views from the small, but perfectly formed balcony are perfect. There's a great sense of space in the property and if we didn't want the break to be as intimate then another couple could have easily shared comfortably with us as the two double bedrooms are similar in size and both have en suite bathrooms. Although I might have argued for the one with an even larger wardrobe and more drawers!
The Citadel location is ideal in that you can easily walk down to Calvi Town, which we did every morning to get fresh bread and a paper.
Again in the evening you are within such easy reach of the array of waterfront restaurants, but it's definitely worth staying closer to home a couple of evenings and sampling the food at the eateries within the Citadel walls.
Saying that, the kitchen at Apartment Carla is so well equipped, that if you wanted to stock up at the local markets, you could very easily prepare your own culinary creation, and also invite some new friends round, what with the large dining table.
Although the beach is minutes away, we also clambered around the rocks of the Citadel to find our own secluded spot by the sea.
Although you don't need a car (we got the train to Ille Rousse), I would advise it as it means you can see so much more of the North of Corsica. We had a great adventure exploring the Balagne Villages, Cap Corse and St Florent a feat that would have been a challenge, to say the least, using Corsica's public transport.
Overall, Apartment Carla, as part of the Citadel, just fulfilled the genuine Mediterranean escape that we were seeking.
